About Slekt1

Slekt1 is an independent website that was created on the 14th May 2008 as a descendant of the website Slektsforsknings.net.The site aims to gather partially spread information about Norwegian "bygdebøker" and family books, both digital and printed editions. There are a number of tables of contents scattered around the web that advantageously can be gathered in one place, Slekt1. The website digitizes also self both family books and tables of contents, but so far no "bygdebøker".

Responsible for the site is Trygve Kikut, Here I am engaging my interest in genealogy on another level. The strong focus of Slekt1 on books that are relevant to genealogists is due to my desire to utilize my strengths, as I daily work as a librarian with the discipline responsibility for the local history collection at Tønsberg and Nøtterøy library.

A brief history of Slekt1

On the 15th of April 2008 The Marketplace opened on the site. The Marketplace aims to offer a free advertising space for those who want to buy / sell family books or "bygdebøker". The desire for such a gathering has been expressed in several genealogy forums, and several posted ads the following days.

Sunday the 26th of April 2009 was a dark day for Slekt1, when several files from the server was accidentally deleted. In total, over 300 tables of contents were lost and about 600 different texts, including the bibliography "Bygdebøker in Norway". The positive outcome of this accident was that new security procedures were implemented making it impossible for a similar event to occur.

The website was rebuilt in the summer of 2009 and is steadily growing in size. On the 27th of March 2010 the directory of "bygdebøker" in Norway, got a "neighbor" in the directory of Family literature. The new directory is far more extensive and also complicated to develop, since this type of publication most often happens privately.

On the14th of May 2010, the web shop was launched in an attempt to give the site a financial boost, so that it could stand on its own and not be funded by private funds. The webshop was closed down in January 2012.

After much testing and evaluation of the possibilities to translate the site into other languages, in the autumn of 2011, at New Year 2012 there was established an English version of Slekt1. The English version is constantly growing in size, but it is a time-consuming work to translate almost 4 years of work.
