A unique collection of data is now available for those interested in early automotive history in Norway, or looking for information about their ancestors' vehicles. In the 1929 registration, consisting of 36,006 cars and their owners, enthusiasts and genealogists now find a valuable source of information.
This detailed 1929 car book provides insight into who owned the cars, which models were popular at the time, and also geographical trends in the distribution of cars across the country. Such data not only helps with historical research, but also provides a fascinating insight into the development of society and technological progress in the interwar period.
The details from 1928 are particularly valuable because they reflect a time when the car was becoming a more common sight in Norway, and the transformation from a society heavily dependent on horse power to a motorized society. With access to such data, one can easily reconstruct the historical development of automobilism in Norway and how this affected both big cities and smaller communities.
Just from two years earlier, the number of cars on Norwegian roads had increased by almost 7,000, nearly 20%. Over the next 6 years, the number would continue to increase to 57,868 cars, i.e. almost 60% more cars.
36,006 cars and car owners that drove on Norwegian roads in 1929 are now searchable on Slekt1. This takes the total number of cars and car owners searchable on Slekt1 up to 351,000!
By gathering information from national and regional vehicle registers in a joint search, it is now possible to gain unique and rapid access to track vehicles and vehicle owners over time. How long did my great-grandfather actually own that Ford? Did he buy it used?
The car books also contain slightly different information, so by following the car through several car books you can gain access to additional information such as horsepower and model year. Perhaps you can also discover that the car's area of use has changed, for example from pure passenger car to taxi or vice versa?
In the Car Book for 1929 you can find information such as; registration number, name, location, what the car was used for (type) and car brand. Searching for names and registration numbers is free of charge, but for further information you must have a subscription to Slekt1, which contributes to the operating costs of the website.
