Choice of surname

With the exception of a few royals, we all have a family name, but where does it come from? Genealogical names are used for a group of people who have a common ancestry. The name usually follows an agnatic lineage (transmission from men). However, this is changing, the father's surname is no longer as strong and newlyweds are now much freer to choose their form of surname.
