Heads are returned

New Zealand has been demanding the return of the mummified heads since 1980, but this is only happening now. When the heads are finally returned to the indigenous people, they will be buried.

It is not only on the other side of the globe that heads are being returned to indigenous peoples. Most people probably still remember the debate in Norway concerning the return of Sami skulls.

In 1997, Sami Parliament President Sven Roald Nystø demanded that all Sami skulls be returned from the University of Oslo to Finnmark. Until around 1930, the Department of Anatomy had organized an extensive collection of several hundred Sami skulls and skeletal parts. Sami graves were opened and body parts were removed.

Some skulls have been returned, but skeletal remains and skulls belonging to the Sami population are still held at the University of Oslo.
