The collection of cars and car owners from Møre in 1957 contains information such as, registration number, owner's name and possibly title/occupation, residential address/location, purpose of the car (private car, van, taxi, etc.), as well as the make/manufacture of the car.

In 1957, cars had been subject to rationing for nine years and there were still two years left until Norwegians could freely buy cars. In 1959, the rationing of cars in Norway ended after the Second World War.

Owning a car in Norway in the 1950s was quite different to what it is today. There were far fewer cars on the roads and the roads were far less developed than is the case today.

Today, very few people do any repairs or maintenance on their own cars, perhaps beyond washing the car and changing the tires. In the 1950s, cars required far more maintenance and it was common for car owners to carry out their own maintenance and repairs.

The various forms of car books/registers that were written from around 1920 and for a few decades provide genealogists with some spice to their family history. They can't be used directly to trace the family backwards, but they can help to confirm a person's connection to a place.

Car books are a fun way to follow relatives who owned cars in a slightly different way. They usually list the place of residence, type of car, and what it was used for.

In addition to telling more about private individuals, the car book is also a unique insight into which businesses (that owned cars) existed around Norway before and after World War II.
