The military records of the 50,000 men and women who took part in the Easter Rising and the War of Independence are now available in the newly opened Military Archives, at Cathal Brugha Barracks in Dublin.

The files, dating from the 1940s onward, have been moved to the Rathmines archive which was opened by Ireland’s President Michael D Higgins and the Minister for Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht, Heather Humphreys, on Tuesday.

Two sisters in Ireland are searching for their mother, who they have no seen in over 50 years, believe that the answer to all their questions could be in the United States and are now appealing to the public for help.

Eileen (55) and Bridget (61) Gormley, originally from Sligo and now living in Dublin, believe that their mother Nora Agnes Gormley may have traveled to the United States to live with two aunts.

A court document from the 18th-century has provided proof that Elvis Presley had Irish roots.

The paper, which dates from 1775, shows that William Presley, the singer’s great-great-great-great-grandfather, left Leinster for a new life in America, the Irish Times reports.

Presley, a farmer, originally came from the townland of Stranakelly near Shillelagh, Co Wicklow.

According to the court document, he claimed he had been savagely assaulted by a group of men in Hacketstown, in neighboring Co Carlow.

Each year, folks celebrate the coming of spring with a festive, beer-drinking, green-wearing day in which “everyone is Irish.”

This weekend, though, the actual Irish of Omaha — some of whose ancestors helped build the city from its start — commemorate a more somber event. It’s the centennial of the 1916 “Easter Rising” insurrection that was crushed at first but eventually led to the Republic of Ireland’s independence from British rule.

The top ten cities with Irish American population have been identified by census records as have the bottom ten.

The Buffalo newspaper, the Business Journal did us all a favor by rating 52 cities in America by their Irish population.

There will be much surprise what city finishes in last place. No, it’s not Salt Lake City which I would have guessed, or Boise or some such place with little Irish activity.

The newly discovered Irish relative of Annie Moore, the first person to pass through Ellis Island immigration center in 1892, has spoken of the influence of the Cork woman on generations of Irish immigrants in the US and how she has become as symbolic figure for Irish Americans.

Moore, then a 17-year old girl from Cork, made history on January 1, 1892, when she passed through the Ellis Island Immigration Station in New York Harbor on its opening day, the first person to do so.
