The Freedman Bureau project is underway to make over four million records available online. African Americans will soon have access to Civil War-era family history records.

The Freedman Bureau, created by the Federal Government immediately after the Civil War, helped free slaves to transition to citizenship. Housing, labor and marriage contracts were collected as well as hospital, assistance, school and other legal documents over a seven-year period.
