In 1926, 1,627 cars and their owners were registered in «Bilboken for Norge». This was an increase of almost 16% more cars and a stronger increase than what was the case in Oslo at the same time.
If you look even further back, to 1916, there were now more than seven times as many cars on the roads in Hedmark.
Car books are a fun way to follow relatives who owned cars in a slightly different way. They usually list the place of residence, type of car, and what it was used for.
So was one of your ancestors among the earliest in Akershus or elsewhere in the country to acquire a car? You can find out by searching in one of the collections under the menu “Find family” or directly in all the car books we have made searchable here on Slekt1.
In the 1926 Car Book, you can look up:
- Owner's name and title/occupation, if applicable
- Place of residence (in some cases, you will also be given the exact street address here)
- The make of the car and what it was used for
- The car's registration number
Do a search in Bilboken from 1926, As of now, the counties of Akershus, Hedemark, Oslo and Østfold are searchable. During the spring and summer, more and more new counties will be added.

The picture above shows a Lillehammer street on a spring day in 1922, photographed by Anders Beer Wilse. The car in picture E119 is a Dodge registered in Oppland and belonged to Hotel owner Christian Christiansen. This and the other cars registered in 1926 in Oppland will be available in a week or two on Slekt1, searchable in the collection The car book from 1926.
