Check the weather back to 1870!

«When Alfred was born on June 11, 1903, the clouds were heavy over the city of Bergen, but the sun still peeked out from time to time», do you notice how the sentence brings more life to the genealogical information? But can it really be true that the weather was as described when Alfred was born?

Yr.no is a service that all Norwegians over the age of 10 are probably familiar with. We may use it up to several times a day, and we're not alone. If Yr itself is to be believed, French farmers have also found out how accurately Yr reports the weather.

But did you know that Yr can bring your genealogical information to life, just like in the example above? Through Yr you can check historical weather data, so if there was a weather station in the place you want, you can find weather data all the way back to 1870.

How to find historical weather data

  1. Go to yr.no
  2. Search for the place you want to find the weather from
  3. In the menu on the left you can click on «Weather as was»
  4. Then click on «date search»

On the right-hand side, you will see a box that informs you how far back they have weather data from the particular station you are at. If they don't have information from that station, they will check a nearby one.

It's good to know that in some places, historical weather data is not available very far back in time, even from nearby locations.

If you're really nervous, you can use the Seklima service from the Norwegian Meteorological Institute.
