On February 20, 1939, Leonard Clarence Dufault enters Lander Grocery in Chestnut, Grand Forks, North Dakota. He has a revolver with him, which he points at proprietor Bert Lander. Dufault pulls the trigger and fires two shots and Bert drops dead. This was the beginning of a series of tragic circumstances for this Norwegian-American family.
