LEGACY ANNOUNCEMENT BY COMMANDER GUSTAV MØRCH
KRISTIANIA 1923
GRØNDAHL & SON'S BOOK PRINTING COMPANY
Preface
The first known ancestor of the Mørch family, who lived in Melsomvik from some time after the middle of the 18th century and from there partly moved to Smaalenene, was Lars Andersen Mørch.
His parents are not known for certain. Several genealogists have attempted to fully resolve this question, but have not quite succeeded due to the lack of church records and other public documents. They assume, however, that he was the son of master Anders Knudsen Mørch, born in Sandefjord in 1672 and died there on July 11, 1749, and his wife Anne Christine Rosenvold, born in østre Aker in 1683 and died in Sandefjord on May 24, 1772. Anders Knudsen Mørch, who belonged to the so-called Sandefjord Mørch family, was again the son of Knud Alexandersen Mørch, who was born in the first half of the 17th century and died in Sandefjord in March 1673, and his wife Johanne Simonsdatter born in 1639 and died in Sandefjord in July 1716. We do not know where Knud Alexandersen Mørch came from, but judging by the name Alexander, and since his descendants in Sandefjord and Larvik wrote the family name Mørch with the final letter h, I assume that he or his predecessors came from Denmark. This has not yet been investigated further.
Lars Andersen Mørch
HIS LIFE and place of residence are only known between 1734 and 1749. I have not been able to find his place and year of birth in any church book, but I assume that he was born in Sandefjord ca. 1707. The place's first church book does not begin until the winter of 1709. His year of death and place of burial are not known either. Presumably he was a sailor from the beginning until the early 1730s, later a farmer and merchant in Ø. Aker. He was 29th sept. 1734 he was betrothed at «Hovedtangen» at Akershus fortifications to Inger Marie Pedersdatter Bloch and married to her in Akershus castle chapel on the 3rd of Dec. s.a. His guarantor at the betrothal was farmer in Ø. Aker Nicoloai Rasmussen Thoer, who was Anders Knudsen Mørch's brother-in-law, and her Mads Jensen Bloch, who lived at Hovedtangen and was probably her uncle. - Her year of birth is also not known, as Aker's church book for the period 1689 through 1713 is lost.
As newlyweds, they lived in «Morstuen» in Ø. Aker, not far from the current Alna Bru railway station. In 1689, Anders Knudsen Mørch's father-in-law, infantry captain Lars Larsen Rosenvold, owned the living quarters, and in the mid-1730s they were owned jointly by Lars Mørch and farmer Anders PEdersen Floer, who had been married to Captain Rosenvold's widow Annichen Jørgensdatter Mercker. In 1738, they were both forced to vacate the house, after which Lars and his family moved to Saugene near Kristiania, which was then in Ø. Aker. He probably lived here until around 1749. Later, all reliable information about him and his wife ceases to exist.
They had 2 children:
1. The son Knud and
2. daughter Anne Christine, who was born on Saugene in September 1748 and presumably died there unmarried in 1781.
Knud Larsen Mørch
He was born in «Morstuen» in Ø. Aker in 1736, baptized in Gamle Aker's church on August 12th, confirmed in the same church on April 9th, 1752, died at S. Veum in Glemminge parish near Fredrikstad on June 29th, 1832 and buried at old Glemminge cemetery on July 5th.
His godparents were: Peter Wilhelm Knoph (officer), Nicolai Rasmussen Thoer, Madame Sophie Biernitz (wife of a military doctor), Madame Elisabeth Sophie Knoph, née Rosenvold, and the former's wife as well as maiden Christine Wager, daughter of a dragoon lieutenant.
He was trained as a blacksmith in Kristiania. In the spring of 1760, he moved with his family to Tønsberg and around 1762 to Melsomvik, where he lived until July 31, 1827, when he left this place and traveled to S. Veum to his youngest child Anders, where he spent his last years. In 1798, he owned half of a small brig «Inger Helene». The other half was owned by his son-in-law Jan Sørensen Foyn, who ran the same. He is said to have been very strong. When he lived at Veum and was over 90 years old, he walked on his legs from Veum to Fredriksstad Forstad and back again, a distance of over 1 mile.
He wrote his name:

He was married twice: 1st time 3dje nov. 1758 in Kristiania with the widow Eleonore Lovise Johansdatter Marichs, baptized in Akershus castle chapel 8th Novbr. 1733, d. in Melsomvik 28th Septbr. 1795 and daughter of Johan Georg Marichs, b. 1699, d. Eleonore had in her first marriage been married to baker Ole Jensen in Arendal and in this marriage had a daughter Karen Johanne, who was married to a later customs official in Tønsberg Peder Bristrup, and from them descends on the spinning side the Pande family in Tønsberg and Fredrikstad.

II. Lars Knudsen Mørch and his family line

Lars Mørch was a shipmaster from Tønsberg before 1788. In the spring of 1788, he moved to Fredriksstad Forstad and became a shipmaster, shipowner, shipbuilder, merchant and large property owner as well as a very wealthy man. He had a shipyard at Glommen on the site where the suburb's fish market is now located, and around 1809 he built the frigate ship «Haabet» with 215 commercial passengers, a very large ship by the standards of the time. It is not known how many ships he owned. In 1807 he owned, among other things, the ship «De forente brødre» and at the time of his death, in addition to «Haabet», the brig «Fortuna», the trunk «De 4 brødre» and half of the brig «Emanuel». Of houses, he owned a new house built by himself around 1790 with an accompanying large quay at Glommen, located on the corner of Nygaardsgaten and Færgestedsveien to Kragerøen (current matr. nr. 21), a large farm at Forstadens torv (the later Bruunegaard), the large property St. Croix, which was then in Glemminge, the pleasure estate «Frydenberg» near Myragaten and the farm «Omberg» in Tune, which was later sold to the master of «Haabet», master Lars Sunde. He kept a very hospitable house. The preceding photograph of him is based on a painting owned by Consul Emil Mørch's heirs. He was married twice. The first time on May 7, 1788 in Fredriksstad Forstad in Madame Endresen's house with Maren Marie Holst, b. May 10, 1763, d. 27th Jan. 1812, daughter of skibsreder? III. Ole Knudsen Mørch and his family line
Ole Mørch was a shipmaster and lived in Tønsberg during the census on February 1. 1801. He died before Febr. 1806, since his widow then received a royal grant to sit in the undivided estate of her deceased husband. Presumably he either died and was buried abroad or perished at sea, as his burial is not recorded in Tønsberg's church books. He was 8th Decbr. 1797 married in Tønsberg to widow Anne Sophie Jensdatter Schaar b. ca. 1758, d. on St. Croix at Fredriksstad June 1, 1841. She was the widow of shipmaster in Tønsberg Ander Knudsen Berg. The 3rd time she was married in Slagens church on April 4, 1811 to merchant in Vallø Erich Larsen who died before her.
With Ole Mørch she had only one daughter Louise Bugge, baptized in Tønsberg 13th Febr. 1799, d. in Fredriksstad 21de decbr. 1870 and married on May 4, 1824 in Slagen church with her cousin shipmaster Alexander Mørch. See before, pag. 24.
IV. Dorthea Knudsdatter Mørch and her family line
Dorthea Mørch was married 2 times. 1st time 17th Febr. with farmer Henrik Sønderdahl b. 1755, d. in Melsomvik 19th Octbr. 1799, 2nd time 18th Aug. 1802 in Melsomvik with Ole Eriksen Berg. b. unknown, d. unknown. Children in 1st marriage:
- Knud b. 1785. His date of death is not known. Neither his confirmation nor funeral is recorded in Stokke's church books. Nor is he listed in the census for Melsomvik on February 1st. 1801. Presumably he died by drowning somewhere in his childhood.
- Johanne Marie was baptized in Stokke church 16th May 1789, confirmed there in 1809. Later, nothing can be found in church books or probate records about her. I am, however, inclined to believe that she has been married somewhere and has had children.
- Eleonore Louise baptized in Stokke church 31st Octbr. 1798, d. in Fredriksstad Forstad of cholera Oct. 6th. 1853. She was married 2 times. 1st time 30th Jan. 1821 in Melsomvik to shipmaster from Nøtterø Jens Kjøge Movig b. 31te oktbr. 1798, d. 1821 shortly after the wedding, 2nd time in 1822 to the first husband's older brother Søren Hansen Movig b. 22nd Novbr. 1794. d. 1836. After his death, Eleonore moved 29th June 1836 with her children to Fredriksstad. 5 children:
- Jens Kjøge b. 4de oktbr. 1822, d. 1837 on a sea voyage.
- Henrik Ditlev b. 11th May 1824, d. 6th Jan. 1896 on Jeløen near Moss. Shipmaster and shipowner. Married October 15th. 1852 in Fredriksstad with Julie Mathilde Ulsteen b. 1827, d. 1877. They had 5 children, 4 sons and 1 daughter. 3 of the sons died at a young age, the 4th unmarried in 1892. The daughter Eleonore Lovise b. 2den novbr. 1861 lives in Kristiania. She was married at Moss to master mariner Harald Haslum, who died November 7th. 1903. No children.
- Anne Marie was born on 13 May 1826. She was married abroad to an English engineer and died in Siebenburgen a long time ago.
- Karen Antonette was born on March 16, 1829. She was also married to an English engineer and has lived in Riga. By the way unknown.
- «Søren» Ludvig b. at Nøtterø July 31st 1832, d. in Fredrikkstad in 1905. Shipmaster and shipowner. He was married 2 times. 1st time 27th Febr. 1857 to Susanne Elisabeth Arnesen b. 6th Jan. 1837, d. 1874 and 2nd time with Anna Sørlie. Children in 1st marriage:

Dortheas child in 2nd marriage:
Erik Henrik was born in Melsomvik in 1802. More is not known about him in the past. However, I have reason to believe that in this marriage there has also been a daughter Karen Marie b. 1808, who on March 5, 1834 in Slagen church was married to an Anders Johannesen Berg b. 1805.
Ole Eriksen Berg with wife and children probably moved from Melsomvik after 1802, but I have not succeeded in finding out where. - According to W. Lassen's genealogical tasks, Knud Mørch left 10 children, 43 grandchildren and 66 great-grandchildren at his death on June 29, 1832, of which 5 children, 14 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren had died before him. - According to this, Dorthea Berg should have lived in 1832.

VII. Anders Knudsen Mørch and his family line

Anders Mørch became a sailor and was shipmaster from Drøbak in 1800. When he stopped sailing is not known for sure, but it must have been after 1807, as his ship that year was hijacked by the English, and he himself was put in the «price zone» in London. However, he was soon released. The following portrait of him is photographed after a small painting on ivory, which was probably made during his captivity in England.
He lived in Drøbak from approx. 1800 to 1803, in Frederiksstad Forstad from 1803 to approx. 1807 and later on s.. Veum in Glemminge. In the suburb, in 1807 he bought his brother Lars's house, built in 1790, matr. no. 21 in Nygaardsgaten, but sold the property again in 1816 to a shipmaster Nils Kloed, as he had bought the same year the farm s. Veum, where he had previously only lived for rent. In 1827, Kloed sold the house in Nygaardsgaten to Anders Mørch's eldest son Jakob, who in turn sold it to his brother Andreas in 1844. In 1897, it was transferred to the municipality of Fredriksstad and in 1916 partly to Fredriksstad Privatbank. The main house was later demolished and moved to Hankøsundet.
After retiring from the sea, Anders Mørch became a shipowner and farmer etc. Among other things, he was also co-owner of a windmill that stood on the highest peak of Apenesfjeld, not far from the farm «Lykkeberg» in Fredriksstad Forstad. It burned down in 1853 and was not rebuilt.
He was 24th Jan. 1800 married in Drøbak with Catharine Elisabeth Gierdrum b. in Drøbak 1779, d. in Sarpsborg 31st May 1848 and daughter of klokker til Aas og Drøbak Jacob Alexandersøn Gierdrum b. in Kristiania 29th Aug. 1732, d. in Drøbak 9th Decbr. 1815 and wife Johanne Magrethe Jaspersen b. in Aas in 1751, d. in s.. Veum on May 13, 1835.
Anders Mørch wrote his name in 1816:
