The child wanderers of the 1800s

The many large but poor families in Vest-Agder sent children as young as 6 or 7 out to look for work. In the spring, they had to leave their safe homes, and they were not expected to return until autumn had arrived. It was also expected, of course, that they would return with wages from their summer work.

It's no coincidence that Aftenposten is writing about this era now. On Friday, March 26, the film «Yohan-barnevandrer» will premiere at several of Norway's many cinemas.

The film is intended for the whole family, but remains faithful to historical facts. about child migration in southern Norway at the end of the 19th century. «The movie is a Cinderella story about talented 10-year-old Yohan. He lives on a poor farm with his parents and four siblings. Yohan is forced to migrate to the richer farms in the east of southern Norway. He becomes a shepherd and guards the livestock against wolves and bears and threatening people.» (Source: Filmweb.no)
