The Bookshelf is available free of charge to anyone with a Norwegian IP address - unfortunately, you will not be able to access these books if you are outside Norway.

Books that are protected by copyright must be read online, but books that are exempt can be downloaded completely free of charge. In order to provide this fantastic service, the National Library of Norway has to pay 36 øre for every page that is digitized. The money naturally goes to the remuneration organization Kopinor, which in turn distributes this money through grants and the like. All in all, the National Library of Norway estimates that the service will cost them around NOK 8 million next year.

For the past 4 years, Slekt1 has been following the digitization of genealogical and village books from both the National Library of Norway and others. We will of course continue to make sure that you as a genealogist have quick and easy access to genealogical books that are freely available online. Even though we do our best to keep up, we appreciate tips from you who use the site.
