In the fall of 1897, the U.S. Congress decided to import reindeer from Norway. A humanitarian disaster seemed to be unfolding in Klondike, Canada. Winter had come early that year in the north, and the Yukon district was overcrowded with wet, frozen, and hungry gold miners who were becoming increasingly desperate.
