When you start genealogical research, you usually start in the present and work your way backwards in time. Parents, grandparents, great-grandparents and great-great-grandparents can often be found without too much difficulty. As you move backwards through the 19th century, the work becomes more demanding, but for most people quite possible. By the time you reach the 18th century, many people have already come a long way compared to what they first thought was possible - and then the question often arises: How far back can I really go?
