Our roots

The first thing I notice is a new chapter called «Genealogy - a professional community». Here, the authors tell us a little about DIS Norway and the Norwegian Genealogical Society. In the same chapter, they include information about the website slekt.no, which they describe as «A useful website for Norwegian genealogists (...)». This makes me wonder how much Nils Johan Stoa and Lars-Jørgen Sandberg actually visit slekt.no, a website that is sometimes completely dead. At the time of writing, the most recent post on slekt.no is more than three months old.

Stoa and Sandberg write in their introduction that «In this edition, the book goes a step further by also including source material in the municipal archives». It thus seems to the reader that chapter 17 «In the municipality's archives» is completely new, but a look at the third edition shows a similar chapter.

What is new, however, is the introduction of QR codes, a so-called Quick Response code, which can be scanned with a smartphone or tablet using a dedicated application. Such a QR code is used to provide information about a web address, email address, contact information, etc. The QR code to the right contains a web address that takes you to Slekt1«s Facebook page. In the fourth edition of »Our roots", you can scan QR codes that take you to the websites mentioned in the book, a great and little-used way to stitch together traditional books and new media.

The fourth edition follows up in the same style as the previous edition and is clearly useful for those who want to learn more about genealogy, but if you are starting out with genealogy, the book «Genealogical research» by Liv Marit Haakenstad is slightly better. Unfortunately, at the time of writing, Haakenstad's textbook is no longer on sale.

If you have the previous edition of our roots, you can safely save your money for this new edition. If you don't already have the third edition, this edition may be useful for you, the book can be purchased via The Mound Book to 332 kroner.
