Over the Midsummer weekend, DNT and the National Heritage Board opened the new historical hiking route Allmenningsskogene in Hedmarken.
- The forests of Hedmarken have been central to Norway's development, and now we want more people to experience this exciting part of Norwegian history. Here you can literally follow the traces of the past: From old log flumes and restored rafting facilities, to charming trails and forest huts," says Tor Kåpvik, Acting Secretary General of the Norwegian Tourist Association (DNT).
Allmenningsskogene på Hedmarken is a hike through forests and cultural landscapes from south of Rokosjøen in Løten to the abandoned Morskogen railway station by Lake Mjøsa. Along the route you'll find several traces of mining, settling, timber operations with sawmills and rafting.
- "This is a fantastic hike through a beautiful forest landscape with a historical flavor. We are proud to be able to open it as a new historical hiking route," says Kåpvik.
The route was officially opened with an opening event at Malungen Gjestegård on Saturday 21 June, and consists of four one-day stages totalling 72.6 kilometers. Along the way, you can spend the night at the unmanned DNT cabins Tingstadkoia, Fløtdamkoia, Gammelsaga and Morskogen vokterbolig.
The country's 19th historic hiking route
Historic hiking routes are a collaboration between DNT and the National Heritage Board, making old trails better known and more widely used. The selected routes offer great outdoor experiences in combination with unique cultural heritage.
- The forest is an important focus area for those of us who work with cultural heritage protection in the years ahead: We need to learn more about the cultural monuments left by forestry, the archaeological traces found in the forest - and we need to invest in better wood to restore churches, boats and houses," says Hanna Geiran.
Allmenningsskogen på Hedmarken is the 19th historical hiking route in Norway. The route has been developed in collaboration with Romedal Almenning turstilag (RAT), Stange Almenning, Romedal Almenning, and Hamar og Hedemarken Turistforening.
- "I'm proud of the ten-year collaboration with DNT on the historic hiking routes around the country. The volunteers in DNT make a fantastic effort to mark, take care of and make the hiking routes richer experiences for us all," says Geiran.
