Publisher's description:
This book tells the story of the individual farms in Åsane from prehistoric times to the present day. Among other things, we learn about archaeological finds, property ownership, arable farming and animal husbandry, population, urban travel and court cases at the village parliament. The modernization of Åsane began around 1860. Salhus and Eidsvåg became the two most important industrial communities, but industrial plants linked to local watercourses also appeared on several other farms. A number of farms along the sea were given steamboat docks, and road construction gradually gathered pace. Improved transportation created closer ties between the farms in Åsane and the urban population in Bergen. During the 1900s, major changes took place. Many farms were closed down, and agriculture is now almost defunct. Early industry, particularly related to textile production, disappeared. In its place, a modern district emerged with a versatile business community, large housing estates and a range of services for residents. The book is richly illustrated and contains a number of never-before-published photos.
