It places the coastal community of Flosta in an exciting regional, national and international context.

Here you can read the story of how the local community opened up to trade and interaction across the Skagerrak with Jutland. It was this connection that laid the foundation for a maritime culture that would leave its mark on the community for hundreds of years.

The book follows the historical development chronologically. We learn how the local community changed with the changing international economic situation. This applies not least to the dramatic years when Denmark-Norway was at war with England.

In the golden age of prosperity after 1850, the local community showed that it was able to participate in the development of the new opportunities created by international shipping.

It's a book that tells the story of shipowners, seafarers and those who helped to keep shipping going. As the book cover says, it is ”... a story that in many ways is common to Norwegian history and that of many other coastal communities, but is special in that in Flosta there were not many alternative livelihoods”.
