MyHeritage launches new features for genealogists

Recently, MyHeritage launched two new features that will make it easier to work with historical sources and get a better overview of your family's geographical background. The new features are called Scribe AI and Country Coding, and both are designed to help genealogists interpret and structure information in family trees.

The biggest news is Scribe AI, an artificial intelligence tool that can analyze historical documents and images. By uploading a photograph or scanned source, the user can have the text automatically transcribed. The service can also translate the text into other languages and provide explanations of symbols, expressions and historical details found in the material.

According to MyHeritage, the technology is designed to do more than traditional text recognition. The system is trained to understand both handwriting and printed text in multiple languages, while also being able to interpret visual elements and provide suggestions on how the information can be used further in genealogical research. The aim is to make hard-to-access sources easier to understand and save researchers time-consuming interpretation work.

At the same time, MyHeritage introduces the Country coding feature in family trees. This automatically adds a country flag to people in the tree based on locations associated with important life events, usually birth or baptism. This allows the user to quickly see which countries different branches of the family are connected to.

The feature can also make it easier to spot missing information. If a person in the family tree lacks location information, no country will be shown, which can highlight gaps in the research.
