The pauper's cemetery on Hart Island in New York

America's largest mass grave (Potter's field) is located in the Bronx on an island outside New York City. The site has traditionally been closed to the public, even to relatives of those who rest there. Those who have wanted to visit the graves of their loved ones have only had access to a memorial grove, but not to the gravesite itself.
