No more handwritten church books

This transition from paper to data will make the work of the National Archives far easier. Scanning of individual pages will cease and searchable databases will probably become far more common. Today, close to 4 million church book pages are indexed and posted in the Digital Archive.

Probably very few of us who are currently looking for ancestors will get any benefit from today's church books. Due to privacy restrictions, many of the information from today's church books will not be available for almost 60 years.

Trude Evenshaug, Director of Communications at the Norwegian Church Council, tells Aura Avis that a good number of parishes have filled in the information on computers as a trial scheme and then pasted printouts into the church register.
