The idea of such an overview has been around for a long time, but with around 7,000 family names and even more articles/books, we had to find a good system to communicate the overview through. The choice eventually fell on the catalog system SOBI2 which enables a number of additional functions, which I will come back to.
Of course, it wasn't just a matter of starting to enter records; the system first had to be adapted to the Norwegian alphabet. Fortunately, we found expertise in this at the web company Web workshop and after some testing, the alphabetization was in order. SOBI2 is essentially a directory for registering information about different companies/businesses, but thanks to an open solution, it was painless to turn it into an overview of genealogical literature.
The overview is not intended as a one-way communication, but allows both comments and rating of the different books/articles. If you want to monitor releases for a specific name, this is also possible using RSS (example).
There is also a separate feedback system that makes it easy to provide feedback regarding the individual record. Under each item there is a «Report error» link, where you can quickly and easily give feedback to Slekt1 if something needs to be corrected.
To date, only a «modest» 2,500 records have been entered into the system and we estimate that this accounts for around 20% of the final (provisional) number. The production of genealogy books/articles has perhaps never been greater than what we have seen in the last decade. The Internet and PCs have made the production of such material possible to a far greater extent than before. Slekt1 will do its best to post what is published and should we miss a publication, we can perhaps count on a hint from you?
