On the website, you can immerse yourself in a number of exciting fields:

Norwegian witchcraft processes

The website has a searchable database of Norwegian witchcraft processes. Here you can search by year, county, location, process number, registration number and defendant name.

In other words, there is an opportunity to find out if one of your relatives was burned at the stake and, if so, for what reason. However, who was burned at the stake varies greatly according to geographical location. If you lived in Finnmark, with its 160 registered cases, you had a far greater chance of ending up as a charred corpse than if you lived in Vestfold, for example, which only has 16 registered cases.

Memory tasks

The Norwegian Folklore Collection also contains a number of other exciting items such as memory tasks. These are autobiographical texts that were collected nationwide. The texts were collected for research purposes in 1964, 1981 and 1996. The digital editions are completely anonymized for privacy reasons.

On the web, in addition to the anonymization, there are also limitations to what you can access. Only seven counties are represented, and memory tasks from 1996 have been omitted:

  • Oslo
  • Østfold
  • Buskerud
  • Aust-Agder
  • Rogaland
  • Nordland
  • Troms

Black books

A black book is a book of spells that contains magical recipes and formulas. These are primarily handwritten books, but printed books also exist.

On Norsk Folkeminnesamling's website you will find a register of known Norwegian black books and a somewhat smaller digitized collection.

Legends and adventure

The latest addition to the Norwegian Folklore Collection's website is a collection of digitized legends and fairy tales from all over the country. Here you can read more about Pesta and the ferryman in Aust-Agder, Tax digging in Vest-Agder and The Junker from Hallingdalen who fell off the cliff at Olberg in Sør-Trøndelag. Everything is organized with the help of a clickable map of Norway.

Here you will find main pages to the website that can help add exciting spice to your family history.
