Vaksdal Historical Society digitized local history books

Bruvik was divided into three parishes: Bruvik parish, Dale parish and Stamnes parish. In 1964, Bruvik herad was divided between the two newly created municipalities of Osterøy and Vaksdal. The old village center Bruvik with Bruvikstranda and Bruvikdalen was transferred to Osterøy municipality. The rest became Vaksdal municipality. In addition, all of Bergsdalen and the upper part of Eksingedalen were transferred from Evanger. The rest of Evanger became part of Voss municipality. In Modalen, the middle part of Eksingedalen was transferred to Vaksdal and three farms Romarheimsdalen, Nipen, Fosse and Dyrkolbotn to Lindås.

Ancient travel on the fjord and in the mountains led families around the area. By digitizing the area, it is possible to link families from farm to farm. A ”Discussion forum” has also been created where comments and corrections can be made.

The editors will update the online edition with corrections at regular intervals.

Process.

The process leading up to the digital edition was laborious. Each book was divided into loose sheets that were scanned as PDF files. The PDF files were run through an OCR program and converted to Word files. This conversion entailed a lot of proofreading work. The quality of the paper in the different books gave different results when converted. After proofreading, the Word documents were converted to wiki files.
