Community associations in North America

Immigrants from Valdres were the first to come together in a team and they organized the first village meeting in Minneapolis on 25 June 1899.

The next village teams to be formed were Telelaget and Hallinglaget, both of which were founded in 1907. Four new bygdelag were added in 1908; Sognalaget, Trønderlaget, Nordlandslaget and Numedalslaget. Later, other bygdelag were added and today there are 29 active bygdelag in North America under the organization Norwegian-American Bygdelagenes Fellesraad.

All these village teams have individual events. According to the Fellesraadet website conventionthe programs contain and number of Norwegian cultural and pedagogical activities. It can be exhibitions with Norwegian art and craftsmanship, cooking, choral singing and other music, books and readings, game men and folk dancing, genealogysclasses, speakers, movie and the Norwegian language can be used in sign, i singer or speech.
