Uelandslekta

Each of the 10 children of Ingeborg Iversdatter and Tobias Tollaksen Ueland has its own color in the book. It all begins with a blue color where you can read about the eldest girl Anna Kirstina Ueland (b. 1872). After five pages of pictures and text about her and the family she founded with Ole Olsen Sør-Varhaug (b. 1847) come the family trees of some of her children's children (i.e. the great-grandchildren of Ingeborg Iversdatter and Tobias Tollaksen Ueland). This is how the book progresses through blue, green, yellow, red, orange, brown, gray, purple, etc.

The nice thing is that the colors follow the sheets all the way to the edge, which makes it very easy to see how much deals with the individual branches after Ingeborg and Tobias. The whole thing is a bit reminiscent of the popular science books that come out every year from Norwegian publishers, easy to read in order to reach the general public.

Unfortunately, the author has not been able to document all the descendants of the couple the book is based on. It appears from the text that there are several people who are not mentioned by name in the book. I don't know why this is, but by all means... researching the present is completely different from researching the past. What's more, the book contains around 2,700 names, which alone is an impressive piece of work.

If I were to put my finger on a negative aspect of the book, it would be the lack of a name index. If you want to look up a single person, you need to know which branch of the Ingeborg and Tobias family they belong to.

The 240-page book is published by Tarald Ueland's own publishing house, «Ueland Historiske Forlag». The layout has been prepared by Stian Søvik at Pierrot Grafisk Studio.

Even if you don't have any links to the Ueland family, it's definitely worth a look if you're looking for inspiration on how you too can design your family book in a newer and more reader-friendly way. Highly recommended!
