Car books are a fun way to follow relatives who owned cars in a slightly different way. They usually list the place of residence, type of car, and what it was used for.
In 1926, 3337 vehicles from Akershus were registered in Bilboka from 1926, with either companies or private individuals as owners. These can now be searched for in our collection The car book 1926.
The number of Akershus cars registered had increased by over 12 % from the previous year, which was a smaller increase than in Østfold in the same period.
So was one of your ancestors among the earliest in Akershus or elsewhere in the country to acquire a car? You can find out by searching in one of the collections under the menu “Find family” or directly in all the car books we have made searchable here on Slekt1.
The collection now includes well over 120,000 cars and their owners, primarily from the period before World War II. For some car owners, this makes it possible to follow the development over time; how long did great-grandfather have that car? Was it his first car?
In the 1926 Car Book, you can look up:
- Owner's name and title/occupation, if applicable
- Place of residence (in some cases, you will also be given the exact street address here)
- The make of the car and what it was used for
- The car's registration number
Since the place of residence is also listed, the car books can be a useful clue if your ancestors moved around a lot. The exact street address is not always given, but you can usually find out the city/town and county through the car books.
It costs both time and money to have genealogical sources transcribed. This means that a search is free, but if you want to see more than the name of the owner, you must have a subscription to Slekt1. If you have a subscription, we reward you with the opportunity to search all car books at the same time.
By subscribing to Slekt1, you not only gain access to more of our content, but you also support the further development of the website.

The picture above shows a Protos car. The car had 16/46 horsepower and was owned by Barner Michalsen. The registration number was later used on a Citroën, owned by Arne Forseth, for a few years before a 1930 Ford eventually took over registration number C642. At the time, the owner was Leonard Hervig, who lived at Bergsalléen 20 in Vestre Aker. All this can be found out by using the service “Search all car books” on Slekt1
