Now that the car book from 1926 has been digitized and searchable in database form, it has also become possible to gain a new insight into how the car fleet in Norway was in 1926.

Last year we announced that every third car on Norwegian roads in 1925 was a Ford.

Through the car book in 1926, we find 9,912 Fords registered on Norwegian roads, which gives a share of 38.61% of all cars that year. This is an increase of 2,31%, in other words, the density of cars and especially Fords increased from 1925 to 1926.

In total, you can now search 138,950 cars and car owners here on Slekt1. Have you tried our shared search for all transcribed car books? (requires subscription)

All electric cars were registered with an asterisk in front of the factory name in the car book, making it easy to distinguish them from the other 25,584 cars. More than half of these 90 electric 1926 cars were registered in Oslo. Many of these were vans and trucks; few passenger cars were registered as electric.

Bilboka 1926 serves as a useful and “untraditional” source for finding more information about one's relatives. Unlike the rest of the country, car owners from Oslo are often listed by street address and not just location.

The following information can be found when searching for a relative in bilboka 1926:

  • The car's registration number
  • Owner's name and title/occupation (may be registered to a company)
  • What address the owner was registered at
  • Art, what the car was used for
  • Factory (Which car brand)
  • Where in the country the car was registered

The picture shows the car belonging to Wholesaler Helge Jakobsen, and probably the owner himself, on its way over the mountain to or from Geilo. The car is a Cadillac registered at Storgaten 12 in Oslo.
