To the east of Trondheim, across the Swedish border, lies Jämtland County. The area was Norwegian for a time, but was annexed by Sweden at the Peace of Brömsebro in 1645. As many as eight wars were fought between Sweden and Denmark-Norway until Norway entered into a union with Sweden.

The register of Jämtland field hunters from 1645 all the way to 1901 can now be searched here at Slekt1. Perhaps you will find a relative who was on the «wrong side» during the many wars Denmark-Norway had with Sweden in the period 1645-1814.

The first soldiers in the register were stationed in what is referred to as Sweden's heyday. The Swedish borders stretched from the Norwegian Sea in the west to Lithuania, Estonia and parts of Russia in the east.

The register of Jämtländska fältjägare 1645-1901 is published by the Swedish National Archives under license CC0 and can be downloaded in its entirety in CSV or Excel format. It is this register that is the starting point for the collection at Slekt1.

The collection consists of almost 100,000 records, where some names are repeated several times. This may be due to changes in the soldier's service relationship with the various Jämtland companies.

Here you can find out their name, year of birth, year of death, military rank, when they entered and left the service, whether they were killed in war or ended up in captivity, etc.

With the help of the autocomplete function we have implemented in the «Find Genealogy» service, you also get good help to find alternative ways of writing the name of any relatives.

The collection does not show kinship, but if you find a distant relative, it can add a little spice to your family history. Enjoy the collection!
