The collection of cars and car owners from Vestfold in 1959 contains information such as registration number, owner's name and possibly title/occupation, residential address/location, purpose of the car (private car, van, taxi, etc.), as well as the make/manufacture of the car.

From being something very few people could afford, as well as limited access through the rationing of cars after World War II, the car fleet now began to grow rapidly. Around 250,000 people owned a car in 1960 and 20 years later, in 1980, the number of car owners in Norway topped one million for the first time.

1959 also marked the end of car rationing, which had been introduced in 1948. Introduced as part of post-war economic planning, rationing was intended to regulate the demand for cars and to ensure that everyone who needed a car was allocated one.

During this period of rationing, only a limited number of cars were allowed to be purchased each year, and those who wanted to buy a car had to be on a waiting list. Those who could afford to buy a car often had to wait several years before they were allocated one.

The rationing of cars had a major impact on society and the economy in Norway after the war, helping to regulate the growth of the car fleet and increase the availability of cars to wider sections of the population.

The various forms of car books/registers that were written from around 1920 and for a few decades provide genealogists with some spice to their family history. They can't be used directly to trace the family backwards, but they can help to confirm a person's connection to a place.
