Cars and car owners from 1916 are now searchable on Slekt1

All cars in the publication “Fortegnelse over de i Norge indregistrerte motorvogner og motorcykler pr. 1. mai 1916” have now been added to the service «Finn Slekt» here on Slekt1. In total, there are over 1500 cars and their owners.

Not many people were registered with their own car 125 years ago in this country. In total, just over 1,500 cars and their owners were registered in Norway as of May 1, 1916.

The cars were registered in counties all over the country, but with great variation in numbers. While Kristiania had «as many as» 455 cars registered, Tromsø county could only boast two registered cars.

Although the car books in the years to come contained more details about the cars, such as what brand, number of horsepower and year model, through the collection Bilboka 1916 you can only see what the car was used for, such as;

  • Passenger car
  • Delivery van
  • Trolley
  • Loading trolley

It may seem that 125 years ago, people were more concerned with registering who had the car and what it was used for, rather than what kind of cars rolled on Norwegian roads.

The famous photographer Wilse has immortalized a car driving across Haukelid, somewhat obstructed by a herd of goats. Perhaps it's a farmer's wife standing on the left, observing a car for the first time in her life? Photo: Wilse / National Library of Norway

Through Bilboka 1916 you can find out the following:

  • Name of owner (private person or company)
  • What kind of title (profession) the person had, or whether the company was registered as an A/S.
  • The address of the car owner
  • Which county the car was registered in
  • What the car was used for
  • The car's registration number

Fun fact... In 1916, 325 taxi owners were registered in Norway. This accounts for every fifth registration in Bilboka from 1916.
