In 1927, 2,592 cars were registered with owners from Trøndelag and northwards. Car owners in Oslo, Østfold, Akershus, and Hedmark have already been added, and there are now over 17,000 cars and their owners from 1927 searchable on Slekt1.
Cars and car owners can be searched for using a limited search in Car book 1927, but also as part of joint search to the car books here at Slekt1. The joint search engine now contains a total of over 288,000 cars and car owners, primarily from the period before World War II, which can be searched for.
The supplement for cars and car owners from Trøndelag and northwards is distributed as follows:
- 1884 U signs and V signs from Trøndelag
- 411 W signs from Nordland
- 180 X signs from Troms
- 114 Y signs from Finnmark
Although this initiative is of interest to both history buffs and car enthusiasts, the main purpose is to give genealogists more opportunities to find information about their own family history.
Car registration records can cover years for which there are no other traditional genealogical sources to refer to, but they can also make it possible to find out where a relative lived in a given year. The prerequisite is, of course, that the person in question owned a car.
In addition, car books can help provide information that can contribute to dating photographs or documents in which the car appears.
The picture above was taken in Storsteinnes in Balsfjorden in the summer of 1928 by photographer Wilse. You can see the license plate X67 in the picture and in the car books from 1922-1927 you can see through the common search that they belonged to «Troms Indland Rutebilselskap». If you click on «details» in the search, you learn that the car was a Fiat and was used as a taxi.
In the 1927 Car Book, you can look up:
- Owner's name and title/occupation, if applicable
- Place of residence (in some cases, you will also be given the exact street address here)
- The make of the car and what it was used for
- The car's registration number
In our last update, we promised that Oppland would be the next county, but then the transcription of Trøndelag and northwards went a little faster than we anticipated. We will therefore try again by saying that Oppland is the next county.
