We have now added more than 2,000 car owners from the period 1915-1918, resulting in a total of more than 4,000 searchable records for this period. In total, we have over 113,000 records with cars and car owners searchable on Slekt1 - more are on the way.
The car arrived in Norway around 1900, and since then Norwegians have never looked back. It wasn't until 1960 that the car became common property after rationing was lifted on October 1, 1960.
In the period leading up to 1960, there were around 200,000 cars on Norwegian roads, but after rationing was lifted, this figure increased over the next four years to as many as 410,000 cars.
On Slekt1 it is possible to search for a number of the former car owners in Norway from the time before the abolition of rationing. As of now, the following years are covered; 1915-1918, 1922, 1925, 1933 (Aust-Agder only), 1935, 1936 (Møre and Trøndelag only), 1947 (Kongsberg only), 1962 (Kongsvinger only).
In addition, we are working on making car owners from Vestfold in 1959 searchable and Bilboka from 1926, where the latter contains the whole country.
Bringing all these records together in a searchable database provides a unique opportunity to follow cars and car owners over time. How long did your great-grandfather actually own the Ford and did he have other cars? Did he use it as a van, taxi or just a private car?
Along with information about the car and the name of the owner, there is often information about the car owner's profession/position and place of residence. This makes the car registers a useful addition to traditional family history sources, for those who have car owners in their family.
The service costs a lot to develop and operate, which is why it is also part of the subscription service here at Slekt1.
