Unsurprisingly, most cars and car owners were in Sør-Trøndelag, many of whom were based in Trondheim and the surrounding area.

One of those we find in Bilboka 1930 is the industrial entrepreneur Christian Thams from Trondheim.

If you search for Christian Thams, you get zero hits, but then he wasn't registered with his name verbatim in the vehicle register either.

Not only did he like to abbreviate «Christian» to «Chr.», but the cars were also registered under the company names; «Chr. Salvesen & Chr. Thams» and «Chr. Salvesen & Chr. Thams's Communicationsaktieselskap»

In other words, it may be worth trying a few different variants of the name to find out if a relative had a car in 1930.

Car books are a fun way to follow relatives who owned cars in a slightly different way. They usually list the place of residence, type of car, and what it was used for.

In addition to telling more about private individuals, the car book is also a unique insight into which businesses (that owned cars) existed around Norway in 1930.

The pictures above show the ferry quay at Nedflaten, Suldalsvannet. The picture was taken sometime between 1930 and 1940. The car on the far right is a Buick registered to Bratlandsdal bilkompani and is probably ready to pick up passengers from the ferry. The car was registered in Nesflaten, as can be seen from Norway's car book 1935.
