Den 8. januar 1921 kunne man lese følgende i avisen "The Concordia sentinel", en avis fra Vidalia, Louisiana i USA: "Did you ever hear of Knut Hamsun before he won the Nobel prize for literature? Well, you needn't feel lonesome-unless you are an old-time resident of Chicago, where he was a horse-car conductor back in the eighties."
